UAW Holding Major Rally TODAY, Sun., Aug., 20, in Metro Detroit for a Big Three Contract that Lifts Standards for Autoworkers and Every Worker

WARREN, Mich. – Hundreds of UAW members will gather TODAY, Sunday, Aug. 20 at 3:00 p.m. EST, for “Solidarity Sunday,” the first major rally in Metro Detroit during this year’s negotiations between the union and the Big Three automakers.

Featured speakers at the event include UAW President Shawn Fain, U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens and UAW Region 1 Director LaShawn English. The rally is being held at 3:00 p.m. in the Pavilion at the UAW Region 1 office at 27800 George Merrelli Drive in Warren, Mich.

The media is invited and the UAW will be livestreaming the event on Facebook and YouTube. (Doors open to the public at 2:30 p.m., press can set up inside beginning at 2:00 p.m.)

Sunday’s rally will take place just 25 days before the union’s contract with the Big Three expires. Fain has called the date “a deadline, not a reference point”; 150,000 UAW members at Ford, General Motors and Stellantis are holding strike authorization votes that will continue through this week. Results are expected by Aug. 24 or soon after.

The UAW recently raised strike pay to $500 per week per member and has over $825 million in the union strike fund. The UAW is mounting an aggressive campaign for a strong contract, arguing that the automakers’ record profits should lead to record contracts.

The Big Three made $250 billion in North American profits from 2013 to 2022. In just the first six months of 2023, they made $21 billion in total profits.
